Applicants must be:

  • Must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents (per NSF rules)
  • Should have taken approved entry-level survey courses (100 series) in their discipline of interest that are accessible to Freshmen and Sophomores. Examples at CCNY include courses such as Bio 102 (Biological Foundations 2), EAS 106 (Earth Systems Science), or EAS 104 (Perspectives on Global Warming); applications from outside of CCNY are expected to have taken equivalent introductory coursework that is reflected on their transcript.

Preference is given to rising Sophomores and Juniors (so freshman or sophomore at time of application), and no prior research experience is required. Students are welcome to apply at any year of their college experience.

We anticipate most applicants to be majoring in Biology, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Science, Geology, and related disciplines. We also welcome applications from students interested in science education and climate science issues.

No prior research experience is required; in fact, students seeking their first research experience are encouraged to apply. We also strongly encourage students from backgrounds historically excluded from STEM to apply, and we support students from all races/ethnicities, the LGBTQIA+ community, gender identities and disability status in applying to our program.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted through NSF’s ETAP system. The application package includes:

  • A CV/Resume

  • Three short answer questions

Applicants who move to the interview stage will be asked for references to contact.

The Summer 2025 program will run from June 9 – August 15, 2025. Applications will be available beginning in mid-November, 2024 and will close March 8th, 2025.
